February 2003

My first MP3 was “Making Love out of Nothing at All” by Air Supply… summer of 1999. Ah, memories!

And I don’t even care if you make fun of me, but Air Supply’s Greatest Hits is one of the best CDs I own!

Sometimes I really feel like a misanthrope. You know?

But I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. I’m typically in good company… last night on AIM Niki and I were talking about how we both feel like misanthropes sometimes. And Niki is definitely good company. :-) (I miss her and Jenny!!)

I. Am. So. Bored.

I. Hate. This. Class!! (yes, I am in class right now… waiting for all the Windoze users to install Enterprise JavaBeans… waste of my time…)

February has been a long month. And a short month. Weird. Time is weird for me.

I’m wondering if I should add titles to my blog entries… it seems to be the trend. (“Everyone else is doing it!”) But I think I’d have problems coming up with witty and engaging titles. Especially since I’m sometimes wont to write 2-sentence entries.

Main Entry: 1wont
Pronunciation: ‘wont, ‘wOnt also ‘w&nt, ‘want
Function: adjective
Etymology: Middle English woned, wont, from past participle of wonen to dwell, be used to, from Old English wunian; akin to Old High German wonEn to dwell, be used to, Sanskrit vanoti he strives for — more at WIN
Date: before 12th century
1 : ACCUSTOMED, USED <got up early as he is wont to do>
2 : INCLINED, APT <revealing as letters are wont to be — Gladys M. Wrigley>

Cool, cool, cool! The TV Tuner for the Performa 631 arrived the other day, and I finally got around to installing it yesterday.

Now. Installation consisted of removing the panel on the back of the computer and sticking the card in.

We set up a cable spliiter so that one cable goes into the TV Tuner and the other goes to our cable modem. Turned the computer on. Opened Apple Video Player. (Computer is running System 7.5.3.) Selected ‘TV’ as input. And ABC News appeared on the screen!

For those of you who don’t know, let me reiterate that this computer is approaching its ninth birthday. For more information about this lovely model, go here: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_performa/stats/mac_performa_631cd.html. This particular computer has the standard 500 meg hard drive but has been upgraded to a total of 40 megs of RAM.

Correct me if I’m wrong. But I think the fact that a 9-year-old computer is sitting next to Chris’s desk serving as a television, displaying a near-perfect picture – and the fact that installing the TV Tuner card took about 15 seconds and required no installation of drivers – is a testament to the Mac’s grand superiority. Add to that the fact that the Performa line was a “low-end” line of computers – this was in 1994, remember – and I don’t think I have to say anything else.

I will take a screen shot for any non-believers out there and post it here shortly.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Windoze-heads!

My eyes are tired. Yet, I wanted to produce *something* of a blog entry.

Even though I feel perpetually behind in some areas of my schoolage, I try to console myself by thinking that, given my J-preference, I’m probably ahead of or at least at pace with most of my classmates.

Niki sent an email today containing another gem of “Bush logic.” … he would be funny if he weren’t the freaking PRESIDENT! He’s going to get us all killed. I look at him and all I see is the frat boy next door. (Proverbial; I don’t know who lives next door to us.) Him and Rummy… ugh… I’m so disgusted, yet what can I do? And *that* makes me feel even *more* disgusted! Anyway… what was the gem of Bush logic, you ask? Well, I will cut and paste from the email Niki sent me. I hope she won’t mind. (If you do mind, Niki, tell me and I’ll take it down, but I’ll also think you’re weird.) ;)

Okay, so Bush said today that protesters would not dictate America’s (or, more accurately, his) Iraqi policy. Then he said, according to ABC News: “War is my last choice,” Bush said at the White House as echoes of anti-war protests circled the globe. “But the risk of doing nothing is even a worse option as far as I am concerned.” Um… so doesn’t that mean that war ISN’T his last choice. Doing nothing is his LAST choice. Going to war is his second to last choice.

This is all so bad. And yet, I get the disconcerting impression that as long as Americans can keep on eating Big Macs and driving SUVs, they won’t give a crap about anything else. (I also sort of quoted Niki on that, too. She’s just full of good things to say!)

Chris had a file on his G3 that I needed; so he put it in his Public folder, I went to “Connect to Server…” and his computer showed up in the window… I connected to it and grabbed the file (drag and drop, of course). His G3 doesn’t have a USB card and our only printer is USB… so we plugged the printer into my iBook, I turned on printer sharing (by simply checking a checkbox) and Chris was instantly able to print to the USB printer from his G3. So cool!

No rebooting, no installing drivers, no futzing around with weird settings and configurations, no crossing your fingers wondering whether it’ll work or not… it JUST WORKS.

It’s like Chris said earlier today… “On a Mac, if you think of it, then you can do it.” (Now that I type that out, I realize it looks like a slogan or sound bite. Funny.)

As an addendum to my entry from the 13th (two entries before this one) – I was reminded of this classic Onion article: Horribly Awkward First Sexual Encounter ‘Worth the Wait’ for Christian Newlyweds. Enjoy.

Big plans for this weekend, folks, big plans:

1) Be an athletic supporter at Chris’s softball tournament Saturday. :-) (I’ll give you $5 if you can tell me what movie that’s an obscure reference to. [Ok, no I won't, but I'll be impressed].)
2) Start on my HCI assignment – a GUI for a Rubik’s Cube simulator game in Java. Interesting.
3) Get Jenny’s new hard drive all set up and ready to ship out to Minnesota.
4) Catch up on all my backlogged email.
5) Continue working on design specs for the programming modules for our project.
6) Clean my bathroom?

Also, I’m going to apply to this: Apple WWDC Student Scholarship Program. :-) Wish me luck!

V-Day was good. I took a 2-hour nap after a 4-hour group meeting this morning, and Chris made tofu parmsan for dinner and brownies for dessert. :-) It’s been a good day altogether!
