March 2003

In keeping with the “silly, waste-of-time internet quizzes” theme, let’s close out March with another one of those things:

You are peach pie!
find your inner PIE @ stvlive.com

Now that’s about as weird and random as it can get.

You are 48% geek
You are a geek liaison, which means you go both ways. You can hang out with normal people or you can hang out with geeks which means you often have geeks as friends and/or have a job where you have to mediate between geeks and normal people. This is an important role and one of which you should be proud. In fact, you can make a good deal of money as a translator.
Normal: Tell our geek we need him to work this weekend.

You [to Geek]: We need more than that, Scotty. You’ll have to stay until you can squeeze more outta them engines!

Geek [to You]: I’m givin’ her all she’s got, Captain, but we need more dilithium crystals!

You [to Normal]: He wants to know if he gets overtime.

Can’t believe March is almost over. That means our project will be coming to a head soon. (What kind of phrase is “coming to a head”, anyway? It’s really gross, when you think about it.) Well, despite my non-desire to learn about XML, it looks like I have learned/am learning about it despite my best efforts. For our mini-project for Dr. Watson’s class, Clay and I created two schemae (is that the plural of schema?) the other day. This weekend, I have to do an XML/Java assignment for Arpinar’s class – write a Java program to parse the DOM tree of an XML document. :-P Oh boy, does that sound like fun or what? And for our mini-project for HCI (Human-Computer Interaction), it’s looking like using XML might be the logical thing to do (we’re creating a “resume generator” [a la Monster.com] for MIT students). At least we’re not using XML in our big project! (The mother of all projects.)

Before the XML-ing commences for the weekend, Chris and I are planning to go test drive a New Beetle. :-) Just for the hell of it. I mean, why not?

Subject: Pine on ARCHES Goes Away April 14, 2003

You are receiving this email because you have used Pine to access your email on ARCHES during the current year.

If you haven't already heard, Pine will be discontinued on ARCHES April 14. The new email system for the University of Georgia, UGAMail, does not support "telnet-like" access, thus eliminating Pine as a viable, general-access e-mail option.

We know this is an inconvenience for Pine users. We recommend that you begin using one of the email programs described at this web address:

www.arches.uga.edu/imap.html

Again, we know this is an inconvenience, and we appreciate your support and understanding during this transition to a new email system for UGA.

Your one-stop shop for information regarding UGAMail migration is:

[sigh]… I guess I shouldn’t go off on a tirade about it like some old curmudgeon… but hey, maybe I *am* a curmudgeon, and maybe I’m proud of it! I’m not afraid to admit that I am vexed by the fact that all of my students (that I know of, anyway) use web-based *everything* (OASIS, email, etc…) and have *never* used anything else. I mean, it wasn’t that long ago that I was a freshman at NYU… there were telnet terminals – terminals, not computers – everywhere for students to check their email. Guess there’s no use in acting surprised… technology changes at a rapid pace and all those other cliches. Ah well.

Apparently I am listed with an Indian search engine/portal under the category “Christmas pages” because of my pictures from Christmas 2001. Bizarre.

I went downtown the other day intending to take pictures of protestors at the Arch, but there were just a handful of tired-looking hippies sitting around. Disappointing. Then the next day, I was sitting outside Starbucks with Azi and Mary, and a big crowd developed, with signs and other paraphernalia, and some cops were standing around and then a TV crew showed up. Of course, I didn’t have my camera with me that day. :-P I went back downtown today thinking there might be something going on because it’s Friday – but no, just tired hippies again. At any rate, I got some good pictures of downtown and North Campus and will post some when they’re developed. (No, I don’t have a digital camera. I’m so archaic.)

And for any of you fellow Athenians who might be inclined to comment on my supposed Starbucks patronage… I said I was *sitting outside* Starbucks, I didn’t say I bought anything there!

In my spare time (ha ha) I am working on a page about browsers – specifically, comparing the strengths and weaknesses of browsers other than IE. I’m going to post reviews of browsers along with the obligatory information like supported platforms, where to download, etc. So far, I have written a review of Safari, and plan to write one of iCab and OmniWeb, eventually. Chris is going to write a review of Opera, and Ken said he would write a review of something (don’t know what). If you wanna contribute, just email me and let me know. It’s gonna be excellent.

And here is the web site of the Amber Rhea mentioned in the previous post:

http://wych.fws1.com/index.html

I’ll keep my comments about my thoughts on the site’s design and layout to myself… you can make your own judgements. But be forewarned: it’s a Geocities site, so beware of the pop-ups! (Unless you use Safari, then you don’t have to worry about that.) ;-)

I received this email:

am i speaking to the wiccan amber rhea???? its eddie from flock o seagull infamy.... please reply

Actually, I know who this person was trying to get in touch with… there’s another Amber Rhea out there who has this Wiccan web site with all kinds of artwork and whatnot… I found her site when, one day out of curiosity, I decided to do a Google search for ‘Amber Rhea’. But I just think that email is hilarious – Flock of Seagulls? Wow…

I’ve gotta get some sleep. I’ve been looking at all this stuff way too long. At the moment I’m obsessed with the thought that we should be doing our web site template using PHP include files. I should’ve thought of it a long time ago, and at this point everyone might not be willing to change it. (Even though it wouldn’t be that big of a deal to change… but still…)

I’m really enjoying the project and the MIT program as a whole, but… lately I just have to keep repeating to myself that all this project craziness will be over in 5 weeks.

I keep forgetting that I have to take a Maymester class. Well, not *forgetting* really, just – it’s not going to seem like *school* after surviving these last two semesters! It’ll be a breeze! (If nothing changes between now and registration, I’ll be taking Digital Media Production. Maymester is May 14 – June 5.)

I was forced to buy a stupid cap and gown and hood today. $50 down the drain. All for a symbolic, medieval rite.

Alright. Really. I’ve gotta get some sleep now before I continue my bitchy post. I’m in an irritable mood and I need some Z’s!!
