June 2003

Well, in less than an hour we’ll get to see if the new if/else condition I added a few weeks ago works. (If there are fewer than 10 entries for the current month, just display the most recent 10 entries; else display all entries for the current month.) Here I wait with baited breath.

Okay, details about the past week. First of all, being without internet access for so long was weird. And it was weird to think about the fact that 5 years ago, I wouldn’t have found it so weird. Anyway. St. Paul was a blast. Jenny and Niki and I had a really good time (and Jenny got a clean room out of it as a bonus!) I’ll post pictures soon. [Aside: right now I'm in the process of uploading pictures from my camera to Best Buy's stupid, slow-ass "Photo Center" so I can order prints... I wouldn't even bother with this crap if I didn't have a pre-paid print card with 46 free prints left on it... which, to be clear, we bought with the camera because the salesguy told us it could be used with the digital print machine in the store, but it CAN'T, so he either lied or just didn't know what he was talking about... but I digress...] Jenny was house-sitting, so we got to stay in this really nice, big, old house, each with our own bedroom. The only TV in the house had a 9-inch screen, though, which we found odd considering the hip-ness of most everything else… they also had a computer (cough: E-Machine) but not internet access. Strange.

So anyway, it was good times all around. And now I’m back in the G.A., and the coming week will be very busy, because I’m going to have to seriously get my ass in gear for moving. Tomorrow I shall commence the hunt for boxes (bookstores, office supply stores, liquor stores…) and also call the movers. Oh, I found out that even though we do get paid for training (“Katapultz University”), instead of getting a check at the end of the 3 weeks, they mail a check on August 1st. I was hoping I’d have my first paycheck *before* the actual move, but oh well, you can’t fight city hall… (I don’t know what that has to do with anything, I just wanted to use that phrase)

Back in Georgia. Many adventures were had in Texas and Minnesota. I’ll ramble at length later — I might need a short nap now. Just wanted to confirm that I’m back in the state where I belong.

I’m in Texas. Right now I’m in Austin — Niki and I decided to come here for a night to save money that we’d otherwise have to spend on a hotel, and to just have a little time to relax. We’ve been doing a lot of running around, and it’s been exhausting, especially with the ridiculous heat. Yes, I grew up in Georgia so I’m used to heat, but it is HOT AS HELL here in Texas. It’s been giving me headaches. But the good news is, I think I have found a place to live. Yesterday (Saturday) I arrived in Dallas at around 11:00 AM and we commenced apartment-hunting almost immediately. We looked at a few places, and some were okay, but nothing that I was overly thrilled about… so I was feeling worried and uncertain. Today we went to Plano (Plano : Dallas :: Gwinnett : Atlanta) and looked at a place called Eastside Village, which I had checked out before in the Apartment Finder book and on the internet. It is so nice! I really like it. I like to live closer to the city (I’m very “urban”) but that’s really the only “con” to this place. It’s new, the apartments are cool (instead of just the “blah” type of apartment you find in all those dime-a-dozen complexes), the building itself is cool and has a lot of amenities, and the DART line stops right outside the building. The DART line also stops about a block from the school where I’ll be working, so that’s awesome — no driving in crazy traffic for me! (At least not to and from work.) Tomorrow morning we’re heading back to Dallas and I’m going to put a deposit down on one of those apartments.

Last night we had dinner with Reagan — that was awesome, since I hadn’t seen here in god knows how many years! We went to a really good Indian vegetarian place. (The power went out for about 5-10 minutes while we were there, which was kind of surreal.) We’re going to get together with her again tomorrow. It’s nice to have a “native” to show me the ropes. ;-) And she’ll be in town until August 26th (when she goes back to school in New Mexico) so we’ll have lots of time to hang out.

Oh, we also checked out the school where I’ll be working… yeah, it’s kind of in the ghetto. Not really the *ghetto*, but just a kind of sketchy part of town. It seems like the kind of place that should be fine during the daytime, though. We’re going to drive over there again tomorrow to see how it is during the week.

We’ve been to 3 stores so far to try to get me a copy of the new Harry Potter book, but they’ve all been sold out. :P I guess that’s to be expected though! But Niki has the CDs (23 CDs… 27 hours total… it’s craziness!) so we listened to it on the way down to Austin, and we’ll listen to it again tomorrow on the way back!

Tuesday we leave for St. Paul… then the three of us (me, Niki, and Jenny) will be able to cause trouble together until Saturday. I’m looking forward to it. And I’m glad I’ll know something definite about where I’m going to live when I move, so I won’t have that hanging over my head!

Okay, off to bed now, we’ll have another big day tomorrow…! Stay tuned for further dope on Texas.

So, tomorrow morning I’ll be winging my way to lovely Dallas, Texas. My plane leaves at 9:50 AM, which means Chris and I are going to have to leave here at 7:00 AM. Oh the humanity! Chris is almost fully recuperated from the yanking of his teeth. Athfest is this weekend, so we went downtown to check out the beginnings of it tonight. Didn’t want to stay out too late though — we need to get a good night’s sleep. I have a couple emails to answer and then I’m heading to bed. That is, unless I get caught up doing these stupid online quizzes… they’re very addictive somehow…

This one’s awesome, though:

The Dante’s Inferno Test has banished you to the Second Level of Hell!
Here is how you matched up against all the levels:

Level Score
Purgatory (Repenting Believers) Very Low
Level 1 – Limbo (Virtuous Non-Believers) Low
Level 2 (Lustful) Very High
Level 3 (Gluttonous) Moderate
Level 4 (Prodigal and Avaricious) Low
Level 5 (Wrathful and Gloomy) High
Level 6 – The City of Dis (Heretics) Very High
Level 7 (Violent) High
Level 8- the Malebolge (Fraudulent, Malicious, Panderers) Moderate
Level 9 – Cocytus (Treacherous) High

Take the Dante Inferno Hell Test

Hell yes, I’m lustful and heretical! Woohoo! Alright, off to bed now… and onto a plane tomorrow morning!

I am Cheer Bear
See what Care Bear you are.

WTF? I’m Cheer Bear? Well, the description sounds at least somewhat accurate, but I don’t think I’m bubbly and bouncy — at least, not in an annoying way. I’m no sorority chick, but I do try to keep a positive attitude. I’ve been there and done that (as they say) with the opposite and it’s no fun. I keep it real, dog.

I was just reading some girl’s blog, which I found by following random links at various other blogs. Turns out she’s 23, just like me. She wrote a long entry all about the history of her and her ex (I’m not clear whether he’s her ex-husband or just ex-fiance), by whom she has two daughters. What a mess: cheating, one kicking the other out and vice versa, moving back in together, living with cousins, guys beating each other up… and so on and so forth. I got angry because throughout it she keeps apologizing for her ex’s behavior (probably unconsciously). The part that really pissed me off was when she was talking about the time he left for good (or at least for now), when she was pregnant with their second child, and the very next day started seeing another woman… she kept saying things like, “I know it was mostly my fault”, and “I was pregnant and emotional”, and “I was bitchy because our air conditioning was broken and we didn’t have much to eat and I was hungry all the time”… WHAT?? I hate it when women put themselves through shit like this, let themselves be treated like utter shit and then try to find excuses or place the blame partially on themselves, probably in an effort to be “fair”. That’s all well and good, and personally I always make a serious effort to consider my role in any conflict and what I could have done or not done — admittedly, sometimes probably taking it too far. But I hope that I would not take it *that* far, were I in that situation. Anyway, it just pisses me off… umm, yeah, if you’re pregnant you have every right to be “bitchy”, *especially* if there’s no AC and not enough food!! Hello!! Tell that lazy shit to get off his ass and get a job, or two, or three, and fix the damn AC and bring you food and give you foot massages and all the other attention you deserve! -Okay, I won’t go off on a tirade. My point is (what, I actually have one?) that reading her blog did piss me off, but at the same time it made me feel thankful that I don’t have all that kind of crap going on in my life. Yes things may be difficult and I may have a lot on my plate, but there’s always a bright side, and the bright side here is that I’m not in a situation like *that*. It’s good to be reminded of the bright side now and then.

Well, this entry wasn’t nearly as eloquent or articulate as I would’ve liked it to be, but oh well, that’s the way it goes!

Seriously you guys, if the Weather Pixie makes this page load slowly, let me know. She sure is cute but I’m starting to wonder whether she really belongs here. Maybe she should be free to roam other parts of the web.

Not much is going on. Chris is recovering nicely and I’m having a good time being his nurse. :-) I need to call Reagan tomorrow and coordinate meeting up with her in Dallas Saturday. Well, I guess I’ll go read and then head to bed.

Maybe this was a silly pointless entry, but I felt like writing something! [Now that I have an email notification list, I pause before the urge to post any mundane little thing -- I feel a greater sense of blog responsibility b/c I don't want to send people emails for nothing. Never mind the fact that only 2 people are on the notification list.] Oh, that reminds me: today I was reading some random person’s blog and they were talking about doing a service to “the blogging community.” Give me a break!

I just accidentally licked a little bit of dishwasher detergent off the tip of my thumb, thinking it was, well, not dishwasher detergent. I hope I don’t die.
