Excerpt from my old-fashioned, pen-and-paper journal (which I don’t write in nearly enough), from Jan. 3rd, 2004:
I’m back in DFW now after visiting Chris in Georgia for 2 weeks. And I’m more confused than ever now. I’ve had a headache all day. … At first I was glad to be back in my apartment. And I still am, don’t get me wrong; my apartment is one thing that I do like about living here. It’s my little safe haven. … I have pretty much decided that barring a miracle, I’m quitting Katapultz after this year. But tonight I’m starting to feel this dread and wondering if I can even do it for 4 more months. I don’t want my life to pass me by.
So, yeah. Consider this the obligatory “Wow, look how much things can change over the course of 1 year” entry.
I’m thinking of starting a private, password-protected blog that’s accessible only to me. I could even just run it on my iBook. That way I could write down everything I want, but type instead of writing by hand… because I’m pretty sure I have carpal tunnel or something. :P My hand always cramps up.

A personal digital diary would be great. I haven’t done it yet because of the hassle of backing up files and hoping they’ll be accessible in the future. (Imagine wanting to read a 5.25″ floppy — or 3.5″ if you have an iBook. Could USB storage devices be replaced? How many recordable optical disc formats will we see?)
I think typing daily and printing monthly would be a good idea.
I wish I could write on paper in code.
You could be like Doogie Howser, M@ber! Of course, you’ll need the old blue screen word processing software, like the WordPerfect we had back in the late 80s. And maybe you could do a voice-over as you type, with meaningful pauses and such…
oh that would be brilliant niki!
I think that is a great idea. And i just want to thank you for helping me start my new year with a mac! :)
Why not just start an anonymous livejournal and don’t use people’s real names?
That way, even if someone you knew saw it, they wouldn’t be able to prove it was yours…
Oh, and as far as the writing thing goes, my writing has steadily declined such that when I took the LSAT in October, I had to rest it in between writing for the games section and my essay. ANd now my writing looks little different from a 7 year-olds. I never wrote well, though, and then I got a computer.
Feh.
It really is a sad state of affairs when your hand starts hurting after writing a paragraph or two. I remember back in my younger days (I’m talking 10-11 years old) I could write pages at a time. At university, they’d hand me the little blue books (which were neither blue nor books. Discuss.) for exams and I couldn’t make it pass the first page without have to stretch my hand.
Ugh.
(Though I do like the “Feh” sound, ep.)
An anonymous Livejournal (although I’d probably use Blogger or something — Livejournal is the devil) and all the other suggestions are all possibilities. Or, I could just do what I did when I got my first computer in 9th grade… type my journal in a word-processing program! Hey, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Yet, there’s something more aesthetically pleasing about blogs.
Ah, memories… I used to type my journal in Simpletext when I was in 9th grade, and part of 10th grade too, I think. Back in the good ol’ days of System 7, baby. Simpletext had a character limit, though, which translated to about 10 printed pages of text (I printed it out and kept it in a big binder, much like I do with my blog now). So I had to have multiple journal files… “Journal 1,” Journal 2,” and so on.
Random typing and printing is useful. You could think of it as a letter for the file or something. I have plenty to write about after today and should probably type it so because my hand will get cramped in my written journal.
