Swiffer Blues

I am so over my Swiffer Wet Jet. Oh it makes the floor sparkle and shine alright — but if you think it actually picks up dirt, you’re dreaming. All it does is move the dirt into a corner or along the baseboard, so you still have to get down on your hands and knees with a sponge and wipe it up. At least it’s already moist, though.

Fourth post of the day! w00t!

Amusing Conversation

I talked to my grandmother today. Our conversation went something like this:

Gran: Your mother tells me you’re going to New York this week.
Me: That’s right.
Gran: She says you’re going with… a man.
Me: [laughing] He’s my boss.
Gran: Oh… he’s your boss?
Me: [still laughing] Yes.
Gran: [pause] Is he married?
Me: Yes, he’s married.
Gran: [pause] Oh. Well, then you’ll be very well protected!
Me: [laughing] What? Okay…
Gran: He must really think you’re something special to ask you to go on a business trip!
Me: I guess!
Gran: Well, I know you’ll have fun. Even if he is a man.

ROFL!! WTF?

On that note… must pack! (I’ve had a lingering headache all day. Acetaminophen is shite. Excedrin is the only way to go.)

Midtown in (11) Pictures

Thought I’d posted this link before, but I guess not. Here are some pictures (11, to be exact) that I took yesterday while walking around midtown. I’m pretty pleased with them. Now you can be, too!

Eh. I really do feel sick. Lingering headache, weird taste in my throat, stomach kind of doing flips… I hope it doesn’t get worse or last long. I want to be in fine form for the trip to New York.

So I’m being a lazy ass tonight. Maybe that’ll heal me. I’m disgusted with the state of my apartment but don’t have the energy to do anything about it. Ugh. I hate being sick.

Mitch, NYC, & Sick

Well, earlier I said I would write about the Mitch Hedberg show later, but really, what is there to say other than he was freaking hilarious? The show was awesome. We were in the 4th row — props to Eli for buying those tickets early! He did a lot of new material. And apparently he’s much more widely known than I’d thought… the show was sold out and there were people standing out front with “I Need Mitch Tix” signs. I would’ve taken a picture if I hadn’t thought they would probably chase me away.

Have I mentioned that I’ll be in New York City Monday-Thursday? Well, I will be. For work. I’ll probably write more about that later.

I’m staying in tonight, eating leftover spaghetti and attempting to start some of the cleaning of my apartment, which will stretch into tomorrow. I feel kind of sick tonight. I took a nap from 6:15-8:15 and I think that only made me feel worse, actually. I should probably go to the grocery store and buy something other than Crystal Lite to drink, but that would require putting on semi-presentable and climate-appropriate clothing and walking across the street. Too much effort.

Endorsement

Dave FM is the best radio station in Atlanta. (Of course, most radio sucks, but I’m not going to be a snob about it and say I only listen to “independent” radio or whatever.) Who else would play the following set?

  • Begin the Begin – R.E.M.
  • A Girl Like You – the Smithereens
  • Angel of Harlem – U2
  • Rock Lobster – the B-52’s

Well, off to run around town now, and then come back and clean up my sty of an apartment. Oh, the Mitch Hedberg show last night was awesome. I’ll write about it later.

Poll

Would sleeping with someone who works for a direct competitor of my employer constitute a conflict of interest?

The workday presents enough challenges…

I meant to post this on the 17th

Now it won’t have quite the same effect. Oh well.

Referring to my pen-and-paper journal (how archaic!) from a year ago: Feb. 17th 2004 was the day I got my official offer letter (even though I already knew I had the job, since the weekend before that I flew to ATL to find an apartment) and put in my notice with Katapultz (who would announce less than a month later the fact that they were going out of business as of June 2004). Anyway, just thought it was momentous! Sadly, I don’t have an electronic or paper version of my blog from mid-January – mid-May 2004, so I can’t see what I wrote for public consumption.

Everyone knows where I work, but I’m feeling stupid and paranoid tonight so I’m not mentioning the company name herein. I know that simply saying where I work isn’t going to get me doocedand I know that my boss knows about my blog and evidently has no quarrel with it — but still.

Penelope

Penelope Such a sad night. I can’t believe that in the past two weeks, I’ve lost two finches. As you know, I just got Penelope on Sunday. If she was sick, I had no idea — but then, they are very good at hiding illness until it’s really serious.

Shortly after writing that last entry, I went into the bedroom to check on the birds and found Penelope sitting on the floor of the cage, all puffed up and eyes half-closed. I tried not to panic. I thought she might be eggbound. I reached in the cage and picked her up — she didn’t even resist, so I knew it must be bad. :( I massaged her tummy a little, but I couldn’t tell whether she had an egg in her or not. She wiggled a little but not much. I put her back in the cage and went to the computer to look up avian vets — but it was already 8:00, so I knew everywhere would be closed. I went back in the bedroom and she was lying on her side this time! I was crying by then. I didn’t know what to do. Finally I found a number for a 24-hour emergency vet clinic, and called them. They said they didn’t have an avian vet on staff tonight, but I could bring her in and they could do everything possible to keep her alive until tomorrow, when they could get an avian vet in. So I put Penelope in a small cage and set off for the clinic — it was 15 miles away in Marietta, but it was my only option. I was crying and trying not to get too upset.

I sped up I-75. When I got to the clinic, Penny was still alive, but just barely. I rushed her inside and they immediately took her back. A minute or so later, the doctor came to talk to me. She said Penny was still alive, but in very critical condition — she was barely breathing and her heart barely beating. :( The doctor said they could do CPR and whatever else, but her chances weren’t good. She recommended euthanasia. :( Of course I just wanted Penny to be at peace, so I said go ahead. Afterward they wrapped her up and gave her to me to take home — they had drawn a heart on the outside of the wrapping.

Poor little thing!! I know there’s nothing else I could’ve done, but I just feel so bad. I hope my other birds are okay!!

Tomorrow night I’ll have to go back to Petco with the vet receipt, since their policy says they’ll cover any expenses within 15 days — and of course I’ll have to take Penny, too. :( They might try to give me another finch for free, but I don’t think I’m going to take another one from that store. In fact, I don’t know if I’m going to get another one at all. I might just stick with five.

Not a good night at all. :(

P.S. I took several pictures of all the birds yesterday and managed to get this one of her.

10 Things I’ve Never Done That You Probably Have

So, this guy made a new meme. Don’t know if I’m the first one to do it, but anyway, here are my answers.

I have never…

  1. Been to California
  2. Sung karaoke
  3. Used any illegal drug
  4. Gotten a speeding ticket (…yet. Thought I know its coming is imminent.)
  5. Broken a bone
  6. Been drunk
  7. Cooked anything “from scratch”
  8. Eaten a grilled cheese sandwich (that I can remember, anyway)
  9. Ridden on a motorcylce (50cc scooters don’t count!) ;)
  10. Gone skinny-dipping after reaching puberty

Feel free to post in the comments which ones of these you also have never done! (Sorry about that grammatical mess of a sentence.)
