Posers [and a tangent]

Both Target and Urban Outfitters are selling knock-offs of those “I’m a Pepper” t-shirts from the late 70s/early 80s. But guess what? I have an original. I bought it at a thrift shop in the East Village when I was at NYU (early freshman year, I think). It’s red with the familiar “I’m a Pepper” deal on the front, and some kind of radio station logo with a big ol’ 1982 emblazoned at the top. You know what, I think I might wear it tomorrow. And Tuesday I’ll wear my authentic, early-to-mid 80s Mello Yello t-shirt. I bought that one in Athens in May 1998 — at Go Clothing, which is now Go Bar — when I was doing my senior project (we’re talking high school here), interning at Flagpole and living at the Holiday Inn Express. That’s when I learned that I did not want to pursue a career in journalism. I did help Ballard with a few of the music reviews, though. It was fun pretending to be a music snob — an Athens one, at that! — if only for a few moments.
