That was excellent. And so fucking true.

I gained weight at a desk job. I got laid off and lost 20 pounds.

  3. Adrian says:

    Make that 25.

  4. Amber says:

Due to not eating, or because driving a bus is such a workout?

I am not sure if i should feel behind-not owning anything and without a job..or glad i have postponed the “Real world” for grad school….

  6. Amber says:

You should feel glad. No question about it.

  7. Adrian says:

Just from not sitting at a desk full of food, I started losing weight right away in 2002.

What an incredibly weird idea to me that one *suddenly* enters the so-called real world after a certain day, graduation day. My “real world” kind of faded in over time.

And is the money thing really a surprise to many people? Even innocent college students know all about expenses adding up really quickly, so I don’t think many are surprised only after their first real job.

I’m glad this piece used quotes around “real world,” though. That phrase seems offensive at times, implying that college is somehow artificial or that college students are inherently naive. It depends on how the term is intended, of course.

Same here. Still, I think the blog entry to which I linked is a good one. And I suppose the money thing might be a surprise to people who’ve had their entire education paid for, for example.

And I agree, the phrase “real world” does seem offensive. I was often offended by it whilst in college, actually. Not everyone’s college experience is the same.

But again… still! I think the blog entry to which I linked is a good one!
