At Atlanta Public Affairs, regarding the Supreme Court’s ruling in the 1977 Coker v. Georgia - and more importantly, their statement on why they ruled the way they did - I said (among other things):
It doesn’t matter whether they were intentionally trying to trivialize [rape] or not. They did. As such, they just reinforced the dominant societal view of rape… yeah, sure, it’s awful (or at least we’ll pay lip service to that sentiment, so the angry feminists don’t castrate us), but it’s not that awful. Gosh, people, just have some perspective. It’s not like it’s murder or anything! A rapist doesn’t deservce to be killed for his crime!Well, tell that to someone who’s been raped. See how well it goes over. Because, my response? A big “fuck you!” to anyone who is dismissive of the seriousness of the crime - and that includes dimissiveness by way of passivity.
