This morning I found Max, my adorable, beautiful little Florida Fancy zebra finch, lying dead beside the water dish. :( His mate, Erma, seemed distressed, understandably.
More often than not, it’s a shock when zebra finches die, because they hide their illness so well. If Max was sick, I had absolutely no idea. He seemed fine last night. I hate that he might’ve been suffering and I didn’t know it.
Zebra finches are tiny birds with big personalities. Max definitely had his. He was very mellow and laid-back. He liked to eat, swing, peck at his cuttlebone, and sing to Erma.
There will be a makeshift funeral for him when I get home from work tonight. And I hope Erma isn’t too upset. *sigh*

Aw, Amber, I’m so sorry. Losing a pet is really hard–a lot of people who don’t have pets don’t understand this, but it’s such a very emotional thing.
He looks like he was a real cutie.

Birds are weird at the end of their lives. from what I’ve read, they try extra hard to be “normal” even if they’re about to drop, because sick or hurt birds might get ostracized from the flock. so they front really hard.
insofar as birds are capable of “trying” anything.
but bird people are often surprised because everything seems fine.
When we lost Lucy we were inconsolable for days.
I am so sorry for your loss.
Oh, that’s sad. It’s double sad when they are in pairs, because it takes a long time for the living half of the set to cope. I had one that, I swear, died of a broken heart after her friend died. Poor Erma.
Max was a tough little bird. I’ll miss his little chirping contributions to our “green room” conversations.

Awwwwwww, I’m so sorry! I’ve outlived plenty of pets in my life and it’s never fun. You and Erma were lucky to have that little cutie.
