Here’s a perfect example of what I was talking about.
Totally inexcusable. But I’m not surprised. Frankly, I don’t understand how so many people are apparently not seeing through the bullshit of so-called “lefty” bloggers. Kos and countless others have shown their asses many times over wrt sexism and racism. And now, what’s this? Wonkette regionally biased? Knock me over with a feather!
The mask is off, and it’s been off for a long time now.

Aww… at least this is funny. And I’m from Atlanta!
grr.
Yeah, I don’t find it so much as funny but as ignorant as they portray “us” (being anyone living in the South, not just natives) to be. I was quite tempted to say something and call them out, but I know that it would do more to aggrevate me further and less to sway any of their close-mindedness.
Isn’t there a difference between ignorance and comedic portrayal of ignorance? Taking this seriously is, to me, a bit like taking _The Onion_ at face value (not that that ain’t been done).
I don’t read it as satire a la The Onion; I read it as actual mocking. And I’ve responded accordingly.
I get that. I’m just raising the question, i.e., there might be another way to read it. It’s not that I don’t believe there’s plenty of anti-South bias out there or find that stuff insulting. I just think this is an example of intentionally working within that paradigm. Sort of the same way they (Wonkette) tend to call pacifists gay and the like.
[...] The idea of FooCamp is really pretty neat. It’s sort of an unconference of people from different technology and business areas — I guess people that O’Reilly wants to get together — and help facilitate conversations. This is the first time I’ve been invited and I look forward to meeting some interesting people - especially given that I’m sure most people who are invited won’t be from the south … Represent. [...]
