It is sort of a meaningless gesture, but I never really got the impression that she was trying to paint it as a grand one. It always seemed like more of just a personal little thing she was doing. And, the most she talked about it (I believe... I suppose I should dig through her archives and look it up) was when her father paid the taxes for her behind her back. I won't speak for her, but I don't think her plan was to try to get away with it, but rather she was doing it as a method of civil disobedience that, if she was caught, she would be willing to accept the punishment for. Taxes keep our rivers clean. Taxes keep murderers off our streets. Taxes are a good thing. We need to get to the point where politicians can say, "Tax and spend liberal? Of course I am!" My beef is when some don't pay their share, especially corporations. I love these corporations that do all their "business" stateside but move their corporate HQ to some tax-free island paradise. Each year when I do my taxes I calculate the monthly cost of being an American. I don't recall what it was this year, but I always think it's a bargain. I like to think of it as club membership. Now, granted, the last 7 years I haven't been thrilled with the leadership, but I'm still a club member! I am proud to be a tax and spend liberal!
