Brilliant

First Duane sent me this cartoon, and then I saw it at Feministe. I’ve been meaning to post it, because it kicks ass.

Heh.

heh… my thesis in college was called “What’s Up Baby?”: Sex Categorization and Compulsory Heterosexuality on Internet Relay Chat. In the study, I used 3 different nicks (one “male,” one “female” and one “gender-neutral.”

    Here’s an excerpt:

The results of my preliminary study were simultaneously eye-opening and unsurprising. I did find that I was treated far differently as “Jenna” than i was as “James” or “JG.” Over the course of a total of five hours as “Jenna,” I was sent (without any encouragement on my own part) private messages eight different times, mainly by men interested in my physical attributes (breast size, hair color, weight) or sexual behavior (whether I was a porn star, what kind of men I was interested in — a sort of presumed heterosexuality, and so on). As “James,” I was sent only three unsolicited private messages, none of which led to conversations where I was asked intimate details about my physical appearance or sexual behavior. What is more, using the nick “JG,” I was sent no private messages at all. Because my experience as “Jena” was so divergent from my experience as “James” and as “JG,” I believed it likely that individuals thought to be women on IRC were treated differently than other users.”

Not really surprising that this is still going on, although a little disappointing (considering it was 10 years ago).

    What a great thesis topic!

I love when chauvinists get what’s coming to them… especially if it’s an EMP!

    Ahahhahaha! Niiiice.

The one thing I don’t like is the man rushing in to save women on the Internet thing. To the point where he *orders* Joanna to fire, like she wouldn’t have done it without him to organize everything…

Dammit Trin, you left a comment at EXACTLY the same time as I was putting up a post whining about no one commenting for a few days. ;)
