It ain’t pretty, and it ain’t right, but ultimately TV news producers want to put content on the air that they think will equal high ratings. They don’t give a fuck about equal time or fairness.

Exactly. That's why it boggles my mind how MSM people continue, over and over, to say to our faces that it's "the bloggers" who don't care about fairness and equal time... that they (MSM) are all about credibility and reporting the facts... I mean how can they take themselves seriously and say that to someone's face?

In fairness, I have seen some media and some of the higher traffic blogs (is that high end call girls) devoting some attention to the question of whether prostitution should even be legal. Alan Dershowitz was arguing this point in Anderson Cooper 360 last night. So, if the story has led to renewed analysis of whether prostitution should be illegal and whether prosecution of these crimes is the best use of government resources, then hopefully there's a little good that can be squeezed out of this story.

But yes, as I wrote yesterday I suspected it would be the sordid details of what Spitzer did with the women on those visits that would really drive the media coverage and give this story legs. The cost of hiring these "high end" girls is a secondary titillating interest because most people cannot fathom dropping $5000 for one night of physical pleasure of any sort, be it sex or a spa treatment or the best meal of your life. But the novelty of that aspect fades faster, while the dirty little details of what prostitutes will do in bed that your average male viewer's wife might not be OK with--that's what keeps 'em tuning in.

It ain't pretty, and it ain't right, but ultimately TV news producers want to put content on the air that they think will equal high ratings. They don't give a fuck about equal time or fairness. I imagine in the wake of the Larry Craig scandal there were probably many similarly ignorant and offensive inquiries to gay male activists asking them if they'd come punditize about how you pick up a guy for anonymous sex in a men's restroom.

*fingers crossed*

Most of the other folks who haven't yet "got it" still think they can cordon off their own little section of the internet - ignoring prior art, best practices and actual human behavior - in search of U.ser G.enerated C.ontent, whatever the hell that means.

Still, I'm largely optimistic.

And thanks for the compliment.

Speaking as someone who works in the media (albeit Entertainment and not News) I would hope I and my coworkers do a better job of understanding the world of our viewers/the general populace.

But then again we're ultimately responsible for According to Jim and Big Brother, so it's probably not likely.

These media inquiries sure sound, well, like they're trying to USE someone for free. You know, have that person spend time and energy on them just to meet their own needs. Not that I'm comparing that to sex work. Sex work is paid work.
