I know I should be glad men are writing about sexism in tech (and I am) but stuff like this always kinds of annoys me too. The person who marked it for me in del.cio.us (btw, I can’t remember who this person actually is; their del.icio.us handle isn’t one they use elsewhere, apparently!) said this:
Hmm. Good article, but I find myself not wanting to link to Yet Another Man Discovering the Issue (sigh). Still, the code-of-conduct proposed seems pretty good, and at least he links out to women in his post.
It is a good post, and I’m not annoyed at the post itself (because as I’ve said before, it’s vitally important for men to talk to other men about sexism), but rather the culture around such posts, I guess is what you would call it. It’s like, it’s only taken seriously when a man writes about it; when a woman does, we’re just whiny bitches. Which is the whole point, but irony is lost.

That was a fascinating piece to read. I couldn’t follow all the industry jargon about programming and stuff that was built into it, though. I think the comments thread had some good development of the ideas, and that’s got to be helpful.
Hi Amber:
First, thanks for linking…might not have found this if not for the pingback.
I agree that the environment is dispiriting around this, but the dynamic you suggest just seems to me be proof that it’s an environment in desperate need of change. It might also point to the gargantuan disparity in gender representation. Whatever the reason, it would be terrible if second-order environmental factors caused people to lose enthusiasm around trying to fix the huge knot of issues that exist here. I get that everyone has a personal limit to the amount that they can push, but I would hope that you wouldn’t discount our efforts simply because they happen to happen inside the toxic environment that we’re trying to change.
Regards
Hi Alex, thanks for coming by! Definitely not discounting your efforts - like I said, I think your post was good and I think what you’re doing w/ the Dojo community is great . It’s nice to see that you’re being proactive about it and hopefully being a leader so others can follow suit. My frustration is w/ the fact that the situation exists in the first place, like you were saying in your post.
Hi Amber. I’m zopemaven on del.icio.us. I actually don’t think you know me from anywhere else, but I started ‘following’ you on del.icio.us a few months back, and this seemed like something you would find interesting.
[...] assholes; but… just… argh. It’s along the same lines of the sentiment I mentioned here. Great, another dude finally gets it, has his big epiphany, and we’re all supposed to [...]
