After making efforts to lose about 10 pounds to get to a size I liked, I underwent life changes and a lot of stress and proceeded to lose 10 more, which makes me feel too thin. I have tried unsuccessfully for 2 years to gain 5-7 pounds. It angers me for people to say sarcastically “poor you, you can’t gain weight.” The “you need to put on some pounds” brings out both the “you need to stop telling me what I need to do” and somewhat contradictory “you think I don’t know that already? You think I’m not trying?” responses from me. I would never dream of telling an acquaintance/ casual friend that they need to lose weight, so I don’t see how people think they’re somehow qualified to medically or aesthetically judge someone who’s thin.

I’m glad she mentioned the “too skinny” part because it reminded me of the complete assholeness of strangers. I cannot begin to tell you how many “you need eat” comments I’ve had over last 15 years. STFU!
